Adult Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment is done to correct irregularly placed teeth, it can be done in children, teenagers and adults.

Adult Orthodontics is the dental speciality that focuses on diagnosis, preventing and correcting mal-aligned teeth and jaws to improve appearance and function .Treatment involves using appliances like braces to apply gentle pressure which guide teeth into a more ideal position.

It is done using Braces and/or Aligners. At end of treatment, teeth get well positioned / aligned. Treatment of irregularly placed jaw is done using Functional Jaw Orthopedics.

Braces are also called as clips. The treatment also helps eliminating oral habits like thumb sucking. It improves speech by correcting tongue position in mouth.        

 Braces are of following type : Metal, Ceramic and Polycarbonate

1.Metal braces: These are most common type. They are made of metal brackets and wires. These are durable and affordable. These are most efficient and cost effective.

1.  Conventional type: Time tested, most commonly used and most efficient among all. Available in different sizes such as Standard and Mini/Micro. Wire is fixed to braces manually using elastomeric module.
2. Self Ligating :Similar to conventional type in function. Here wire is fixed to braces using built in, sliding self shutter. Hence the name Self Ligating.

2.Ceramic braces: These are made of tooth coloured brackets to blend in with the teeth, making them less noticeable. They are more fragile than metal braces. These are esthetic alternative to metal braces. Treatment takes slightly longer than metal Braces.

1. Conventional Type: Esthetic alternative to metal braces. Comes in two sizes : Standard and mini. Comes in different material types: Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline. Wire is fixed to braces manually using elastomeric module.
2. Self Ligating Type: Esthetic alternative to Metal Self Ligating braces. Here wire is fixed to braces using built in self shutter. Hence the name Self Ligating.

3. Polycarbonate braces: These are made of resin. They are Esthetic. They lack in strength, so can be used only in certain specific situation.                                                                                                                                                                            

Lingual Orthodontics: It is type of braces which are placed on inner side of tooth surface (surface that faces the tongue). Because of its close proximity to tongue, its highly uncomfortable. These days this type is only of historical importance and not routinely done.

Habit breaking appliance: Some young patients have harmful habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting etc, which can prove to be harmful in future as individual grows up. These appliance helps in breaking such harmful habits.

Interdisciplinary Orthodontics: Type of Orthodontic (Braces) treatment which is performed to aid and improve outcome of other treatment procedures such as Endodontic, Prosthodontics, Periodontics and Implant surgery.
